Our board and supporting committees consist of dedicated, unpaid volunteers.
We aim to keep running cost to the absolute minimum, but keeping the shelter open is a costly affair. Without boring you with the details, it costs $69 per day to house and feed one woman.
The main operating costs are:
- Wages for professional welfare workers who are employed around the clock to ensure comprehensive care, especially considering that many of the women are homeless due to domestic violence and/or mental illness. Welfare workers are needed during the day Monday to Friday (where the focus is on individual case management) as well as for nights and weekends (when the risk to the women from ex-partners tends to be greater);
- Rent and utilities for the property used to shelter the women. Some women staying at the shelter are able to access Centrelink payments and where possible they pay subsidised rent (calculated depending on their income) for accommodation and food.
The shelter receives no government assistance and is entirely reliant on donations, fundraising and (corporate) sponsorships.

Our fundraising partner is MyCause, Australia’s award winning premier online cause funding community for charity and personal causes.
The Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Women’s Shelter (ABN 49 735 037 904) is a registered charity and all donations over $2 are fully tax deductible.
